Attending A Standard First Aid Course

On 7 April, a Standard First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillator course was conducted at the Island Taekwon-Do Centre. Together with 5 other members, I attended the course over a period of 2 days.

The trainer, Mr Jerry Ko along with his assistant, started by introducing themselves and presenting the slides on the aim of first aid, the roles and limitations of a first aider, and we are able to have a better understanding of what exactly a first aider does.

Next, Jerry showed us how a first aid box should be maintained and explained the use of each item while reiterating that the box must only contain those items. He talked about the primary (DRABC) and the secondary survey which is to be performed when someone is unconscious. He actively involved everyone in answering questions and encouraged all to inquire when in doubt.

We gathered back in the dojang after lunch, and continued with topics not limited to treatment of allergies to head injuries and even heat disorders.

On the second day, everyone arrived punctually and Jerry started the course by explaining how to detect stroke symptoms and choking before the most exciting segment began, on learning how to perform the heimlich manoeuvre and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Demonstration given by both trainers and we split into pairs and applied what we have learnt. The trainers gave us surprise scenarios, such as touching the patient just before AED was activated, to test how we handle different types of situations.

After the two activities, the trainer demonstrated how to use a triangular bandage and roller bandage and we were asked to bandage our partner. Both trainers went around to assist those who were struggling and now, we were ready to take our test.

We refreshed our memories on the topics which have been taught these two days, prior to the test. The test included a theory paper and a practical test where we put the primary and secondary surveys to use and we were also tested on the different bandage applications, depending on the different injuries situations.

Thanking the trainers who were patient and made the course fun. Altogether, this course has equipped me with skills to handle different medical emergencies and has broadened my knowledge of first aid and I would strongly encourage members to attend this course as well.
